Dr. Michelle Padley
Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine , Michigan State University
Michelle Padley is a fixed-term Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the College of Human Medicine. Prior to her time at MSU, she was a clinical research professional for over 15 years. Through this experience, along with her formal education, she developed the skills to work with interdisciplinary and interdepartmental teams, establish community and industry research partnerships, and advance professionally within the practice.
While her initial area of expertise was orthopaedics, her academic training was more focused on novel research methodology and informatics, data visualization, LLM, and how to apply those to identify educational and health disparities. To this end, she obtained a Masters from Grand Valley State University in Clinical and Medical Bioinformatics, and a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research Trial Management.
Her PhD from Western Michigan University in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences continued her focus on working across specialties and gaining translational knowledge to be shared with collaborators.
Her current research is focused on addressing emergency medical health disparities in the pre-hospital setting, especially for mental health and pediatric populations. Both these areas require an interdisciplinary approach in order for projects to be successful. This includes working with clinicians, patients and staff, as well as academic and community members to discuss common interests and objectives. In the mental health aspect, she has been building a partnership with Network180, other community resources, and the Emergency Medicine department to evaluate and assess mental health crisis resources outside of the hospital.
In addition to her research, she is deeply committed to the development of innovative approaches to teaching that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving across disciplines. Her role as a co-chair for the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians Task Force for the Medically Undeserved positions her to collaborate with Street Medicine clinicians and advocates across the state.
