Houda Fawaz

Special Projects Manager , Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

Houda Fawaz is a special projects manager in the executive office of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). She leads key strategic initiatives for MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel, focusing on behavioral health, children’s services, and enhancing operational efficiency. These initiatives are designed to drive long-term policy and service improvements, ensuring a lasting impact beyond the current administration.

In addition to her core responsibilities, Fawaz co-leads the department’s DEI training and professional development action team. Her dedication to public service has earned her five good government awards, recognizing her excellence in customer service, teamwork, leadership, equity and inclusion, and excellence.

Fawaz began her career at MDHHS in 2010 as an eligibility specialist with the Economic Stability Administration, working directly with individuals and families to ensure they received appropriate state assistance. She later became a community resource coordinator, leading outreach efforts including food, medical, and toy distributions. She also played a key role in organizing COVID-19 and flu vaccination clinics across Southeast Michigan in partnership with C-Assist Family Health Clinic, a nonprofit serving underinsured and uninsured individuals.

She later transitioned into the role of employee engagement analyst, where she managed the employee engagement survey and developed initiatives to improve workplace culture and retention.

Fawaz holds bachelor’s degrees in business administration and communications from the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Her expertise in policy, workforce development, and community engagement continues to drive meaningful change within MDHHS and beyond.
