Dean Smith, PhD

Senior Associate Dean for Administration, Professor, Health Management and Policy University of Michigan School of Public Health

Dean Smith is a Professor of Health Management and Policy and Director of Executive Education and Life-Long Learning at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. In his administrative roles, he is Chair of the MHealthy Advisory Committee, the umbrella organization for health and wellness programs, Chair of the Pharmacy Benefit Oversight Committee and a member of the Medical Benefits Advisory Committee. He also serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Public Health Institute. He received his bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Michigan and his doctorate in Economics from Texas A&M University.

Professor Smith is committed to a line of teaching, research and service that provides a better understanding of the financial aspects of working with and working in health care delivery and financing organizations. He has published more than one hundred scientific papers, provided more than two hundred professional presentations and supervised more than fifty doctoral dissertations. Professor Smith’s current research includes analyses of programs to reduce the economic burden of asthma, sponsored by the Kresge Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and the Merck Childhood Asthma Network. He is the editor of the Journal of Health Administration Education and the Open Journal of Pharmacoeconomics and Health Economics and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals.
