
Sean Esteban McCabe
Director , Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health
Sean Esteban McCabe is the Carol J. Boyd Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan and director of the Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health. He holds appointments at the School of Nursing, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, and Institute for Social Research, among others.
McCabe has been the principal investigator of 15 FDA- and NIH-funded grants and has authored over 300 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and received several prestigious awards such as the 2024 Betty Ford Award. He is a faculty mentor on five NIH-funded training grants and enjoys mentoring the next generation of substance use scholars.
McCabe has clinical expertise in treating substance use disorders and his research has influenced clinical practice and federal policy. He disseminates research findings widely such as FDA Drug Safety Communications, Lancet Psychiatry podcast, Sesame Street, and live on CNN. He co-leads HopeHQ™ which unites a multidisciplinary team of leaders from over 30 community, academic, and health care partners to deliver evidence-based bereavement programs for children and families who have experienced a parental drug overdose death.
McCabe earned his undergraduate education from Kenyon College and three graduate education degrees from the University of Michigan. He completed a National Institute on Drug Abuse postdoctoral fellowship and then served as the director of the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Research Center.
