Reverse maternal mortality trends: Addressing health-related social needs during prenatal visits

Work must be done to reverse maternal mortality trends in Michigan and other states. In Michigan, maternal mortality rates surpass the national average and recent estimates suggest that 80 percent of maternal deaths in the United States are preventable. In 2022, CHRT managed 42 active projects, provided $4.3 million to community organizations and project partners, trained 34 health policy and public health fellows, developed 10 publications on a range of pressing health policy challenges, gave 17 presentations to hundreds of policy and decision leaders, and was cited in 26 news stories. But those are just the numbers. "We need a statewide infrastructure that makes it easier to connect people to the services they need," says Sharon Kim, CHRT's director of health and social equity.
